Genre: Fantasy (High/Epic)
This is the first book in a long 9 book epic fantasy series. It starts out with discontent towards the Empress (and her absolute rule) and a huge cast of characters. The Gods are looking to get involved with the war as well.
Honestly, I don't quite know how I feel about this series. It was epic and had the starts of a good series. I felt like it was a set up novel and I don't really get why things were happening and we had a special snowflake name change. It had a very established history, but I don't get the rules of the series and didn't really feel anything for the characters. Whiskeyjack, Tattersall, Fiddler, Sorry, Quick Ben and the Sappers were all cool characters.
I think all the makings were there for a good series, it just takes a lot of work to read these books and the first one didn't have a big payoff to be perfectly honest. The world itself was still intriguing enough to give the next book a try though.
3/5
I think this is a good book if you really like fantasy and have the time to dedicate to it. It is an intriguing read and nothing is given easily to you. It's an important book to fantasy and you can tell a vast amount of time went into planning this world.
