I kept hearing about this book, and I bought into the hype. I had heard zero negative feedback about it, but I was still little leery for fear it wouldn't live up to the hype. I didn't need to be, because this book is just that good. I loved it.
The writing was incredible; I got sucked in and couldn't put the book down. I got absorbed by the old Hollywood vibes and Evelyn was a very intriguing character. She wasn't afraid to show her flaws and where she screwed up. Evelyn was a strong, dynamic character and showed a different view to what you'd expect of a female actress at that time. The book was so good because of Evelyn. You read the novel for her and this is a novel for people who like character-driven narratives.
The main character who Evelyn is telling her story too had a bit of characterization and was part of a twist at the end. Overall, I'd compare her to the narrator of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", and Evelyn as McMurphy.
5/5 stars.
There wasn't really anything I disliked.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes character driven narratives, good writing, old Hollywood vibes and diverse main characters.
Cheers,
Jen
