Genre: YA Dystopian/YA Fantasy
Aria has lived her whole life in a protected city called Reverie, but then her mom goes missing so she slips into the Wastelands past the domed city to find her. In the wild she meets a savage called Perry. Perry is looking for someone too and they help each there to survive. The domed city has people living for a couple hundred years in extreme privilege. Perry is from the outside and it is full of uneducated people who don't have access to healthcare.
I'm not sure why this dystopian doesn't get talked about more. I feel like there was an upsurge of dystopian after the Hunger Games jumped into the limelight. There was of bad ones (Matched), or ones that started out good and went to trash (looking at you Maze Runner). I mean this one could as well, but I really liked it. And I have read a lot of Dystopians, especially YA ones.
I really liked Aria and Perry, the side characters (like Roar) were great. They had realistic motivations and character development. Aria was not a fighter (I know right, shocking in YA), but was still not a princess. There was no Insta love, instead it was a slow burning romance. The plot and world building is very well done. I'll compare it to Blood Red Road, which I think is one of the better YA Dystopians in that regard. There is also no love triangle! Obviously it still has some flaws and it's not the most unique storyline but still doesn't have the usual tropes. It had a good blending of romance, action, world building, adventure and dystopian. It's a book that is just entertaining, and I'll be reading the rest of the series.
4.5/5
I'd honestly recommend this to anyone who has not burned themselves out of YA dystopians. It's a quick read and is an enjoyable one.
Cheers,
Jen
