This is the second book about Morrigan Crow, and her time in Nevermoor. She has past the trials and is now in school learning more about Nevermoor and her powers as a Wundersmith. Morrigan is learning that some magic isn't good at school, but she's still keen about the promise of belonging and friendship. The education is promised to be full of wonder, magic and discovery, but all she's learning is how evil Wundersmiths are. Forces are also working to turn everyone against her, especially as people go missing.
I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. Maybe it was the lack of Fen. I think it's cute and very much like Harry Potter with the feeling of nostalgia and wonder. There is an evil presence and a likeable main character and sidekicks. The seasonal celebrations were cute. I liked how it played with the fallibility of adults and how kids pick up more than people give them credit for. It was definitely a cute read, and had a lot of elements of traditional fantasy. It was still original enough it didn't feel too tropy though.
My issue is this one felt a lot younger than the first. Still a cute, enjoyable read that I think will become a well-known fantasy tale over the years like Percy Jackson. But I didn't think there was enough for adults. Harry Potter and the first Nevermoor felt like there was a lot more to them.
Cheers,
Jen
